Cole Palmer has addressed his recent dip in form, explaining why he’s “not too bothered” about his lack of goals for Chelsea since the turn of the year.

The 22-year-old England international started the season in sensational fashion, scoring 14 goals in his first 21 Premier League appearances.

However, he then endured a barren spell, going 18 games across all competitions without finding the net. That run finally ended in early May when he converted a late penalty in Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Liverpool.

Many hoped that goal would reignite Palmer’s scoring touch, but in Chelsea’s recent 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United, the forward again failed to make a significant impact, registering just one shot on target.

In an interview with Sky Sports published on YouTube earlier this week, Palmer was asked about his form and goal drought.

He replied: “At the start of the season, I think I scored 14 in my first [21]. And then I just had a patch where I didn’t score. But I feel could have scored just as many goals [as] last season, this season, but I was just missing some chances and stuff."

“I knew it was going to come, it's just part and parcel of it. I’m not too bothered,” he added.

Palmer, who netted 27 times across all competitions last season, admitted that the sudden drop in form was a shock—especially given how well his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge began. However, he came to see the experience as an important part of his growth.

“Since I joined Chelsea, it's just been straight, but obviously I’ve chatted to the manager, and [Chelsea Director of Professional Football and Scout] Joe Sheild, and he was saying he was glad I’m going through this, because when I come out of it, I’ll be even better than I was when I first joined,” said the 22-year-old.

Palmer: Lamine Yamal is the "best player in the world”

Elsewhere in the interview, Palmer named Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal as the best player in the world right now.

Yamal, just 17, has delivered a stunning season for Barça, scoring 17 goals and providing 25 assists in all competitions, helping the club claim the La Liga title, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de España.

“It’s mad innit. I think he’s the best player in the world, to be honest,” Palmer said when asked about the teenager. “I feel like everything they do just goes through him, and just when you watch him.”

“You can tell the way he plays that he’s confident and he’s got no fear, and I love watching him,” he added.

Asked how difficult it is to play at such a level at just 17, Palmer joked: “I don’t know. I’ve never tried it.”
