Enzo Fernandez enjoyed a superb 2024/25 season for Chelsea, scoring eight goals and providing 14 assists across all competitions to help the Blues qualify for next season’s Champions League and lift the Europa Conference League.
Things didn’t go quite as smoothly for him recently on international duty with Argentina, however.
During a World Cup qualifier against Colombia, Fernandez was shown a straight red card for a reckless and dangerous challenge on midfielder Kevin Castaño, which left his opponent bleeding from the head.
The incident occurred in the 70th minute while both players were contesting a bouncing ball in midfield. Fernandez led with a high right boot as Castaño lowered his head to win the ball and made direct contact with the River Plate star’s skull.
Castaño collapsed to the ground in visible pain, with medical staff quickly attending to a nasty gash on his head. He was replaced by John Arias, and images showed blood running down his face as he left the pitch.
Fortunately for Argentina, the red card didn’t cost them the match. Despite trailing 1–0 at the time of Fernandez’s dismissal, Thiago Almada netted a crucial equaliser just 10 minutes later, ensuring Argentina remained top of the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying standings.
Fernandez is now expected to serve a three-match international ban, coming just after he missed the previous fixture against Peru due to suspension as well.

While his absence will be a blow for Argentina, it could prove timely for Chelsea.
With the Club World Cup kicking off on June 14, Fernandez is expected to play a central role, and a reduced international load could help ensure the midfielder is fully fit and focused ahead of what promises to be a busy summer for the Blues.
