When Jadon Sancho arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer, it felt like a fresh start – for both the player and the club.
After a turbulent spell at Manchester United, where the winger never quite lived up to the hype following his £73 million move from Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea offered him a lifeline: a season-long loan with a reported obligation to buy for £25 million.
Sancho came with baggage, sure, but also with undeniable talent. And early signs looked promising. He tallied four assists in his first three Premier League matches and seemed to be finding his rhythm under new surroundings.
But the momentum didn’t last. A long dip in form followed, and before long, Sancho had slipped behind both Pedro Neto and Noni Madueke in the pecking order. His minutes became more sporadic, and his influence waned.
Despite that, he finished the campaign well, scoring key goals against Brentford in the league and in the UEFA Europa Conference League final against Real Betis – a night that saw Chelsea lift European silverware for the first time in three years.
In total, Sancho made 41 appearances in blue, with five goals and 10 assists to show for it. Respectable numbers given the context – but not enough, it seems, to convince Chelsea to make the deal permanent.

According to BBC Sport, the club have triggered a £5 million exit clause to cancel the buy option and send Sancho back to Manchester United.
The decision wasn’t purely about performance either. Sources suggest personal terms proved to be a stumbling block, with Sancho reluctant to accept a lower wage than his current deal at Old Trafford. With one year left on that contract – and United still owing Dortmund £17 million from the original transfer – his future is once again uncertain.
For Chelsea, it’s a calculated move. The Blues continue to reshape their attack with a focus on younger, high-ceiling players – Sancho, despite flashes of quality, simply didn’t show enough to warrant a long-term spot.
Whether he ends up back at Dortmund, or perhaps joins another Premier League side like Aston Villa, remains to be seen. But for now, Sancho’s chapter at Chelsea is officially closed.
