One of Europe's biggest clubs are reportedly interested in offering Chelsea outcast Ben Chilwell a route out of Stamford Bridge this month.
Chilwell has made just one appearance for Chelsea this season – a game against Barrow in the EFL Cup – and has otherwise been completely excluded from Enzo Maresca's matchday squads.
On multiple occasions, Maresca has made it clear that the English defender is free to leave the club, insisting there is no future for him in West London.
Explaining his decision not to play Chilwell in Chelsea's FA Cup third round tie with Morecambe earlier this month, the Italian coach told reporters: "Chilwell is thinking he's going to leave, it's better to avoid using him to avoid injury."
While it was initially feared that Chelsea may have to pay Chilwell a huge severance package to facilitate his departure, especially considering his reluctance to take a pay cut at a smaller club. However, it appears Borussia Dortmund could now be willing to solve that problem.
According to The Sun, Dortmund have shown interest in taking Chilwell following their failed pursuit of fellow Chelsea defender Renato Veiga.
Veiga, who had been a target for the German club, recently agreed to a loan move to Juventus for the rest of the season.
The 21-year-old Portuguese defender only joined Chelsea in a £11.8 million deal from Swiss club FC Basel in the summer but had grown frustrated under Maresca, primarily being played at left-back instead of his preferred centre-back role.
Juventus will cover Veiga’s wages and pay a £3.8 million loan fee, though there is no option to buy included in the deal.

With Veiga now heading to Italy, Dortmund have turned their attention to Chilwell. However, The Sun reports that Chilwell would prefer to remain in England.
Chilwell, who joined Chelsea from Leicester in 2020 for £45 million, has made over 100 appearances for the Blues, playing an instrumental role in the club’s Champions League triumph in 2020/21.
Chilwell should snap up Dortmund chance
Everything Chelsea says...
While Chilwell may be reluctant to leave England or take a pay cut, time is running out in the January transfer window, and he will need to make a decision soon.
If he stays, he risks spending another six months on the Chelsea bench. At 28, it would be a real shame to see a talented player like Chilwell waste away, especially when a good chunk of his career remains ahead of him.
Dortmund have long been known for playing with attacking full-backs – a system where Chilwell excels.
The opportunity to play at the iconic Westfalenstadion is also dream for many footballers, and it has proven to be a successful environment for English players in recent years, including Jude Bellingham and Chelsea's own Jadon Sancho.
If the move arises, Chilwell should seriously consider the chance to join Dortmund and reignite his career on the continent.
