Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca said last week that Wesley Fofana could miss the rest of the season with injury.
Fofana himself, however, has other ideas.
The injury-prone Frenchman, who missed the entirety of last season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, suffered yet another setback last month when he tore his hamstring in a match against Aston Villa.
Originally set to be sidelined for up to 12 games, Maresca told the press on Friday, according to Sky Sports, that Fofana now "could be out for the season."
"We don't know exactly for the entire season but for sure he could be out for part of it," said the Italian coach.
In an alleged private social media message leaked on X by Blue Footy on Friday, however, Fofana appeared to dismiss his manager's claim.
"It’s not true. I’m not out for the rest of the season, I don’t know why he [Maresca] said that," Fofana is alleged to have wrote. "I will be back in 4-6 weeks."
Fofana's potential early return will no doubt come as music to the ears of Maresca, whose Chelsea side have struggled without him at the heart of their defence.
Since being ruled out in early December, the Blues have won just three of seven Premier League games without him, while with him in the team, Chelsea have lost just once all season.
Back in September, Maresca heaped praise on the 23-year-old France international.
"Wes is a player that I really love, I am in love with Wes!" said Maresca after Chelsea's 3-0 win over West Ham United.
"He is doing fantastic after one year injured and, for any player in the world, when you are out for one year and then you come back it is not easy, and he is doing top," he added. "This is the only thing we want from him."
